


Children of Sukuta -
CURAMUNDI wants to introduce Children of Sukuta,
a medical charity project in Gambia.
Medical care for children Ê
Gambia is one of the smallest countries in Africa with only 11,295 km² and 1.5 million inhabitants. It lies along the Gambia river and is bordered by Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean.
It is a poor country. The average income is less than a dollar a day. Gambia has little natural resources. Its main income comes from the exports of peanuts and from tourism.
Medical care is not always adequate. Little Lea, the girl that inspired us to write the poem about another world was from Sukuta in Gambia. She died at the age of only two months.
Sukuta lies on the outskirts of the capital Banjul. It has about 17,000 inhabitants.
Medical care in Sukuta is very limited. In the local hospital there are only five medical staff members.
Children of Sukuta is a project that wants to provide better medical care for the children of Sukuta at the local hospital. It wants to provide means to:
q have a paediatric doctor come from Banjul once a week to the Sukuta hospital to examine the sick young children and pregnant women
q improve medical equipment available at the hospital
q pay for the medicine for the children.
